A MODERN MIRACLE (By Peace Toone) Did you know that miracles happen ? Some say it is not so. One happened to me on an autumn eve not so very long ago. Nurse brought me a tiny bundle Wrapped in a soft warm shawl, And I felt a wondrous blessing From Our Lady the Mother of all. I cuddled my son beside me, Whispered “ Now, don’t take fright,” Then raised my hand to shield his eyes From the blinding earthly light. I looked into his eyes, so wise, deep blue: “I am your Mother this life,” I said; “ Tell me, please, who were you ? ” He closed his eyes for a moment As if to contemplate Whether he could remember Why our love-tie was so great; But if he found the secret His lips they could not tell, And again I felt the glory Of Her love within me swell; I felt Her radiant presence, Knew that my little son Was one of millions throughout the world That our Lady’s light shines on. You may say that’s not a miracle, But present New Zealand With a Son; Then—perhaps you’ll understand !
