SATURDAY’S GAMES The Waipa Rugby Union’s competitions were continued on. Saturday in fine weather. On No. 1 ground Air Force created a surprise in drawing with United, whilst on No. 2 ground Arohena defeated Old Boys in a hard struggle. Results:— Seniors— Air Force 6, United 6. Arohena 6, Old Boys 3. Juniors • Old Boys 12, Arohena 0. Arohena v. Old Boys Arohena kicked off with Old Boys playing against the sun. Play hung round half-way for some time. From an infringement in a lineout, Arohena took play to Old Boy’s line where Old Boys were relieved with a free kick. Arohena had a shot at goal but Jackson missed. Play was taken to Arohena territory and from a series of lineouts Arohena kicked to Smith who lined with a nice kick. Old Boys pressed hard and were nearly across. From a scrum Arohena cleared and Old Boys were awarded a free kick which Hinton missed. Arohena took play to Old Boys’ line but Old Boys cleared to nearly half-way. Old Boys had the better of exchanges of kicks. From a clearing kick by R. Hinton, E. Lawry went over for a try. Old Boys 3, Arohena 0. From uninteresting play in neutral territory, Old Boys again carried play to Arohena’s 25 but Arohena came again and carried play to Old Boys’ line. Old Boys touched down and a kick by Smith saw Old Boys relieved. Once again Arohena carried play to Old Boys’ line where Ngahoe went over to score. Brown missed the kick. Arohena 3, Old Boys 3. Half-time then sounded.

From the kick-off Douglas lined inside Arohena’s 25 and from a line-out Douglas was nearly across, but Arohena cleared to near half-way. Old Boys pressed hard when Arohena’s fullback miss-handled. Another lineout resulted and Crotty marked. From ensuing play and from a scrum infringement Cumpstone missed a kick. Shortly afterwards Kay missed another kick and Old Boys were going well at this stage. Wanklyn missed ai field goal. Arohena had a forward rush and from a clearing kick by Cumpstone Sinnott cleared nearly to the line. From a series of kicks, Arohena again lined and forced Old Boys back and Douglas saved by lining. Play carried from one end of the field to the other for some time until Arohena found the line in a handy position. From the line-out an Arohena player forced his way over for a try. Arohena 6, Old Boys 3 From the kick-off, scrums and lineout predominated play, but Arohena nearly scored again. However, Ok! Boys cleared to Arohena’s territory, where the game ended. Air Force v. United As the scores indicate, the game between Air Force and United was one that kept the spectators on their toes during the whole length of the match. Play alternated up and down field with changes in the fortunes of both sides. For United Perry scored a try and Carey kicked a penalty goal, while Lewis and Price scored tries for Air Force. In the United team, Foggart, Johnstone and Pollard were outstanding forwards. Barton played an excellent game in the back division and Carey and Perry were outstanding and impressed. For Air Force, Lewis, Hart and Evans were prominent among the backs and Price, Coutts and Mclntosh were the pick of the forwards.
