Rural Housing
Mr A. Jane, secretary of the Waikato Primary Production Council, in reply to Mr Richards at yesterday’s meeting of the Te Awamutu Primary Production Committee, said he could not give any definite information in regards to housing for farm labour. The matter was being discussed in Wellington. A speaker said the whole scheme was wrapped up in the matter of obtaining builders, which was disagreed with by another speaker who contehded it was costs that mattered. A four-roomed house with bathroom cost over £lOOO, and unless they got an easement in regards to the cost of materials they would not get an adequate housing scheme. It was not right to ask farmers to mortgage their farms to the extent of £lOOO to £l5OO to build houses, a statement that found acceptance with those present.
