TE AWAMUTU COURIER Printed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays MONDAY, 28th JUNE, 1943 EVERYBODY’S HELP NEEDED

THE record war loan has, in sporting parlance, got away to a good start, and there is an enthusiasm among the numerous organisations, national, district and right through to the committees in separate firms, which will do much to ensure success, but it would be quite wrong for anyone to conclude that the need for individual contribution is not now so urgent. There is a long way to go. many millions still to be subscribed, and it must be apparent to all that everybody’s help will be needed to provide the finance for what is, without any doubt, everybody’s war. If the loan campaign has started well, then surely the very best thing to do is to keep it going with gathering momentum and place the issue beyond all doubt as quickly as possible. What has been done should be not simply a matter for satisfaction but an incentive to greater effort, a challenge to each individual citizen to see to it that action is taken.

There is, of course, no more compelling incentive than the provision of the money necessary to back up the splendid efforts of our fighting forces overseas, but if any were needed they are provided fully by the fact that great events are pending. The tension is rising as the might of the United Nations is deployed for action against the enemy, and through this loan people who cannot serve except on the home front can do something to build up that strength which will go far to ensure victory. It is the only way in which many people can actively assist, and if it involves a measure of self-denial, as in many cases it will, that adds to the real value of the help afforded.

It takes time to organise support for the loan in nation-wide services and big institutions, but this work is being pushed ahead rapidly. The average citizen, however, can make his contribution now. In the Te Awamutu postal area daily subscriptions before the loan closes must average £ll,OOO. It can be done provided everybody assists to the limit of his or her ability. And there could be no better course than that of the old slogan: “Do it now.” Give the effort that added strength which comes from any and every subscription, be it large or small. Give those who are working so strenuously for the success of the loan the encouragement of practical support. It is a fact that every subscription made brings the country nearer to the goal. And it is also a fact that it cannot be reached without that support. That, in few words, is the position that faces each citizen, and just as there cannot be one who would wish to see the loan fail there can be very few indeed who cannot make some contribution to ensure its success.

War finance is, like war itself, a matter of taking successive objectives. Each marks a stage on the hard road to victory, and victory will repay every effort, every sacrifice made. If that statement should be doubted then what would defeat mean ? This loan is the objective of the entire community, not the final one, but, still, a most important one in our part of a world war. With its aid the State will be free to meet the demands made in what everyone feels will be a decisive phase of the great struggle.
