BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING OF COUNCIL TENDER FOR STOCK ROAD The regular fortnightly meeting of the Te Awamutu Bordugh Council was held on Monday night, those present being the Mayor, Mr L. G. Armstrong, and Councillors F. Parsons, W. J, North, E. R. Olsen, G. Dalton, V. A. de Coek and G. S. Clarke. Leave of absence was granted Crs Spiers and Les. Armstrong. FOREMAN’S REPORT The foreman, Mr R. H. Close, reported:— For the past two weeks the men have been fencing the new stock road and clearing the trees off the road. The contractor has been over the job and we may get a reasonable tender for the earthwork.

We are having some difficulty in procuring pipes for the culverts and the flushes for the dairy factory. The Raglan County grader is forming the road upon the mountain to the forestry block.

I would suggest to the Council that they let their concrete footpaths by contract. I cannot see that it will be possible for the Borough staff to do much, as we have so much other necessary work on hand. We will have the tree planting to see to presently and that will take up a good deal of our time for a month.

The saleyards people are crying out for their sheep races to be concreted before the wet weather sets in; we have been trying to get at it for twelve months, but there was so much other work to be done that we could not look at it. So unless the Council will let the paths by contract I think it will be impossible for the staff to be able to do much in the coming season.

There is the 6-inch main on the Kihikihi Road which I would like to get in as soon as possible, so you see, gentlemen, with this and other urgent maintenance work we have very little time.

All the water meters were read on the first of the month. The shed at the borough yard has been extended and we can now put the orries under cover and lock them up. Repairs have been done to the auctioneer’s room at the saleyards. Have attended to a few water leaks. The general maintenance work has been attended to regularly. The report was adopted, and the foreman is to proceed with the main on the Te Awamutu-Kihikihi Road as opportunity offers. The Works Committee recommendation that tenders be called for concreting of Teasdale .Street footpath was adopted. NEW STOCK ROAD The tender of Messrs A. W. Ensoll Ltd., of Hamilton, of £1334 9s 2d for formation work on the new stock road in the borough was accepted. BOROUGH FINANCES The clerk, Mr Dudley Bockett, presented the balance-sheet for the year ending March 31. This revealed a very satisfactory position, a credit of £2380 16s 9d being shown on the year’s working. The total receipts amounted to £22,467 8s 3d. The clerk was congratulated by the Council on his comprehensive statement. DOG NUISANCE After reading a letter from the borough solicitors, Messrs Swarbriek and Swarbriek, the Council decided to take no further action to provide a by-law to prohibit keeping noisy dogs in the borough. It was pointed out by the Mayor that there was no specific power in the Municipal Act to allow such a by-law.
