LAND SETTLEMENT
SIR ANDREW RUSSELL’S ADVOCACY
Speaking at a provincial conference of the Returned Services Association held at Waipawa, General Sir Andrew Russell said that there would be no hope 6f the people of New Zealand keeping the country for themselves unless they built up a bigger population, and this could best be achieved by settling people on the land. It had to be remembered that every family settled on a farm could be provided for, therefore the more people who were settled in the country—people who invariably had large families—the healthier it would be for the Dominion.
With money values depreciating, it was absolutely necessary for the salvation of the country that they should do something to promote land settlement. In this scheme the advice of practical men, of members of the A. and P. Associations, should be sought so that they would not blunder into buying properties at absurd prices. After the war the world would be dreadfully short of primary products and he was quite confident that for some years afterward they would be able to sell all the products they produced. ,
