FARMER PROBLEMS
HIGH COSTS AND LABOUR HANDICAPS TO PRODUCTION A statement that many dairy farmers were considering the question of turning to fattening dry cattle and sheep because of the difficulties attending dairy production was made by Mr E. H. Rhodes (Te Awamutu), at a meeting of the South Auckland Dairy Association at Hamilton on Monday. There was every indication, he said, that butter-fat production would decline very rapidly unless steps were taken to make dairying more attractive, both to owners and to labour. In view of the vital importance of the industry, the matter should receive the serious attention of the Government. The increasing costs farmers had to meet and the difficulty of securing labour in view of the calls of the Army and the more attractive pay offered by other industries were also mentioned. Remits on the subject were referred to the Dominion dairy conference, to be held next month.
