FARMERS’ INCOMES

FALSE TAXATION BASIS OPINION OF M.P. FOi HAUfe'Afcl That the farmer to-day is- bein& taxed on a false incopie was emphasised by Mr A. S. Sutherland, ,M.B. for Hauraki, speaking in the House . of Representatives .when he urged . the Prime Minister to look into the matter. “Let me now say a word on the taxation ,of fanners’-incomes/’ said Mx Sutherland. “I surest that the farmer to-day. is being taXed. up. a false ipcome.. r Pyrjng/tp. the, shortage of labour, essential maintenance yjprk is being deferred* 1./refejr X.JSisK work as drain-cleaning, the cutting of second house . painting, apd general maintenance 'work which is being allowed to slip. “Another factor to be considered is the inability of the farmer to secure proper supplies of fertiliser. “The remedy, I suggest, is to allow the farmer to build up a fund for the carrying out of these arrears of work in the post-war days. The farmers’ income should, I think, be based on the 1939, 1940, and 1941 seasons. “What appears to be his present Income is not a true income. He is being taxed, as I say, on, a false income. The Government should jiealise ! that and see to it that the Tax Department does the right thing, and.l nope the Prime Minister will look Into the matter.
