RE-SETTLEMENT PLANS
HALTING NATURE CENSURED The halting nature of Government planning regarding the rehabilitation of returned servicemen and, in particular, the land settlement policy, was sharply criticised at a meeting of the New Plymouth Returned Services’ Association executive. It was felt that while land values were soaring the returned men would take up land at a great disadvantage compared with the man buying land at present. Only urgent legislation to stabilise land values would prevent i£tastice to returned men seeking set. BRnent.
After further discussion the following motion was carried unanimously:— “ That this Association appreciates the very good work done by the land committee of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association, and with them views with concern the delay of the Government in formulating a policy for the land side of rehabilitation, and feels that the stabilisation of land values at this stage, after values have been allowed to mount, is definitely to the detriment of returning men; that every effort should be made to urge the Government to introduce a measure that will allow the returned man to take up land at a purchase price based on the productivity of the land over a period of years, and to ensure that he will not become the victim of inflated values.”
A sub-committee was set up to give further consideration to rehabilitation matters.
