NOTED JOCKEY C. G. GOULSBORO (By “Pilot”) One of the greatest horsemen the Dominion has seen in recent ’years, Cyril George Goulsboro, is now seriously ill in the Waikato Hospital, and his many friends will wish him a speedy recovery. Now 32 years of age, Goulsboro served his apprenticeship with T. Lowe (Trentham), and E. George (New Plymouth), and during his career as a jockey he has been associated with many good horses, and but for an accident at Trentham would have been leading jockey in 1938. Some of his most important successes were on Cerne Abbas (New Zealand Cup), Gay Rose (Matamata Cup), Kronos (Champagne Stakes), Mazir (Poland Cup), Sly Fox (Mitchelson Cup), Clinch (Ohinemuri Cup), Siglow (Wairarapa Cup) and Foreign Coin (Wanganui Guineas), but he has ridden many other winners, including Screen Star, Bold Step, De Friend, Skyway, Gay Mimic, Kilonsa, Sulieman Te Hero, Liane, Erndale, Beseige, Inver, Grand City, Lady Meath, Barricade, Black Thread, Defaulter, Big Dook, Reay Bridge, Jos Louis, Okawa, Granvale, Peter Beckford, Hot Box, Bold Step, Haerepo, Catalogue, Race Call, Lucullus Lad, El Meynell, Aly th, Te Monowai, Night Ray, Manpower, Miss Phaleron, Anopheles, Balinavar, Neenah, Beau Leon, Dark Shadow, Lutanist, Ramleh, Beau Repaire, Lou Rosa, Respectful, Miss Baffles, Dark Rose, Mayfair, Estro, Monte Cristo, Orate, Kakarere, Representative, Lord Chancellor, Spinning Wheel, Cillas, Enrich, Landveyor, Gold Vaals, Amigo, The Dozer, Flying Vixen, Foxola, Volifox, Iceland Spar, Nan Vaals, and of course the brilliant Gallio, winner of .the Great Northern Foal Stakes, the Avondale Guineas, the Great Northen Guineas, the-Tren-tham Stakes and Harcourt Stakes, during his short career. Goulsboro claims that Gallio was the best horse he has ever ridden.

By dint of hard work, together with a natural apititude for horses and the facility for making the most of his opportunities, C. G. Goulsboro has made a name for himself on the New Zealand turf,, an dhis absence from the saddle is a loss to many owners and trainees, who relied implicitly on his honesty and judgment. Goulsboro has two brothers jockeys, Clifford Lile, now in camp, and Clement Bryan. They are the sons of Mr and Mrs George Goulsboro, of Te Rapa. On the Spot Followers of “Courier” selections had a good day at Paeroa on Saturday, eleven dividend payers being indicated in this column. In the first Awaiti Stakes our selections were: Ice Floe, Transcend, Bournemouth. That’s how they finished and Bournemouth’s price was a good one. Selections for the Bay of Plenty meeting will be published on Friday. All Cerise Yogi and other horses owned by Mr Frank Ormond are now racing in the all cerise colours so well known to racegoers in New Zealand 20 odd years ago in the heyday of the Karamu stud. Up to the new registration Mr Ormond has been racing in all cerise, green cap. His second colours will be cerise, black cap. Trotting Breeder’s Death The death occured at Christchurch on Monday last, of Mr W. J. Morland, aged 72. Mr Morland was for many years associated with the trotting sport. He won the New Zealand Trotting Cup in 1915 with Country Bell, since then he had bred a number of winners at his small stud.
