INVASION OF EUROPE

WHAT PROSPECTS? “Can we invade Europe now?” asks Reynold’s News, of London. “The decision must be entrusted to High Authority. But the layman can attempt to assess our assets. We possess, in our home-based fleet, a superb fighting force. The R.A.F. boasts qualities unmatched in the history of warfare. The Army adds daily to its striking power. Our capacity for daring combined operations has been shown in Commando raids, which have revealed also that civil populations in Europe are eager to aid our cause. These assets enable us to exploit the tactics, applied by the Japanese, of conquering vast spaces by means of simultaneous landings along thousands of miles of coast-line. What are the prospects ? Even if we failed to maintain a bridgehead in Europe, we could force the enemy to invest fully the territories he has occupied, to deploy thousands of troops where he now deploys hundreds, and to divert great armaments to areas where he might lose but cannot win the war.”
