FARMERS’ CRITICISM SUPPORT FOR TE AWAMUTU REMIT The national broadcasting services were the subject of strong criticism by the delegates at a meeting of the Waikato Sub-Provincial District of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union in Hamilton on Friday, support being given a remit from the Te Awamutu branch which set out, “That as a wartime economy measure the Government be urged to overhaul and re-arrange the programmes of the national and commercial radio stations and eliminate much of the nonessential programmes with a view to reducing the number of stations on the air, and conserving electricity and diverting manpower to essential industries; also that the Government review the publication of the New Zealand Listener,’ which could be reduced in size to a programme of events, and thus meet the paper shortage on an equal footing with non-State publications; overhead control to be reduced to a minimum and commercial stations financed within themselves.”
