HOME GUARD TRAINING On being granted a sine die adjournment, Douglas Archie Parlane, farmer, Te Mawhai, enquired whether, with the busy season about to commence, he could be exempt from at-; tending Home Guard day parades. I These parades generally lasted from ; mid-day to 3 p.m. It was becoming | difficult to find time to attend. Some ; farmers were better placed than the reservist, while others were in aI worse position. In pointing out that the matter was , one between, firstly, the trainee and ; the Home Guard commander, and then ' between the commander and the Army. A member of the committee I said that in other places a reserve of I hours of training had been built up j to offset a falling-short of the month- j ly minimum of 24 hours during the busy period for farmers. It was | thought that the matter could easily | be adjusted. NEWSPAPER WORKER | i Couriers (N.Z.) Ltd. brought an ap-, I peal for George Thomson Chalmers, i compositor. j I Supporting the appeal, A. G. WarI burton said that of a pre-war male ! staff of 16, eight were serving with I the Forces and existing hands number!ed seven. Attemps to transfer female workers from the office to the factory I had been frustrated by the rigid rul- | ings of awards. Besides being emI ployed as a journeyman stonehand ■ the reservist operated the press. The I circulation of the paper was about i 1350. i Mr Hayward questioned whether the I paper was altogether necessary. PubI lie body notices, he supposed, were its ! principal contents. i Appellant: Give us credit for a bit | more importance in the life of the ■ community. i Mr Smith thought that the paper ; was a means of contact. It was serv--1 ing the public, and if small publica- ■ tions were cut out, all business would ‘ be thrown upon the “big monopolists.” | 1 Was the Board entitled to do this, he I asked? i Tn answer to a question appellant i said that if the reservist was taken 'he could see no alternative to the i paper going out of print. Reservist | was in the medical section of the ' E.P.S. and had been a member of the : St. John Ambulance since 1930. The case was adjourned to come up again for review in three months. FAMILY NO GROUND FOR | APPEAL Harold Long, Te Rore, applied for and was granted one month’s leave to complete the sale of his property. An appeal against overseas service on the grounds that he owed a duty to his wife and three children was.disallowed, the Board pointing out that there were many men in the same position and a family constituted no grounds

• for an appeal. An application by J. E. Raine for ! the release from camp of H. Jacobs i was dismissed. Appellant had recently ■ acquired the services of another young ' man, and the Board gave an assurI ance that the retention of his services ' would be provided for. REHEARINGS LATER I D. An appeal by the Te Awamutu Electric Power Board for Arthur Brian Taylor, meter reader, was withdrawn, another man having been trained for the work.
