GERMAN START

REASON FOR MOMENTARY SUPERIORITY

“In military striking power the Germans have proved that they are not only as good as any land army yet brought against them, but better. But what is the origin of this momentary superiority 1 ” (asks the New York Times). “ It is not in courage, which all their enemies have displayed. It is not in intellect, for the instruments of war used by the Germans were nearly all invented and perfected either in Britain or in the United States. It is not in organising ability, as anyone may see who studies the British Commonwealth of Nations or the peace-time industries of the United States.

“ It is simply that for about nine years Nazi Germany has devoted her entire energy, above the bare needs of subsistence, to the manufacture of war. To be a superior race, if that were ever possible, the Nazis would need a ten thousand years’ start. They had, in fact, a six-year-old start, and with American aid they are being overtaken.

“ What is the conclusion ? We are not dealing with a race that is either inferior or superior. We are dealing with a part of the population of a sub-division of Europe which has gone temporarily insane. There is some of the same kind of insanity in every country, but only in Germany is it dominant.

“ It is the frightful tragedy of our generation that only by death and destruction, in which millions of sane and innocent people must be involved, can it be cured.”
