Miss E. Snodgrass, of Mahoe Street, who has been on a lengthy visit to Wellington, has returned to Te Awamutu.

Mrs J. N. Diprose, of Hinuera, who has been spending several days with Mr and Mrs W. H. Garvey, Alexandra Street, returned home yesterday.

Mr and Mrs Thomas L. Coupland, of Rewi Street, who have been spending a holiday at Raglan, have returned to town.

Mr J. Hill, of Auckland, is at present on a visit to Te Awamutu, and is the guest of his daughter, Mrs P. RGlanville, Wallace Terrace.

Mr George Farrell, Kihikihi Road, returned to Te Awamutu this morning after a visit to the Forty-Mile Bush and Ranvitikei district.

Mr V. W. Simms, chairman of the Otorohanga County Council, has been appointed a member of the local Manpower Committee to deputise for Mr A. Hayward. f

Mrs Roy Green, of Piq Pio, has returned from a bolidaydspent at Kawhia. She has just received word that her husband, who is »erving in the Middle East, has beer® promoted to the rank of Sergeant. " | Mr and Mrs C. Pole, of W<ilingt°n, who have been I the guests pf their daughter, Mrs Les. S. Armstrong, of Puniu Road, leave on return home tonight. They have been accompanied by their daughter Elizabeth. | The engagement is announced between Thelma Jocelyn, elder daughter of Mr and the late Mrs A. Cotton, Beach Road, Tahunanui, Nelson, and Clifton Charles Cress, only son of Mrs H. Blackbourn, of Mahoe Street, Te Awamutu.

A very pleasant and entertaining musical evening was given at the home of Mr and Mrs Roy Wilson, Goodfellow Street, on Monday last. Classical and popular musical items were rendered by Mr Hugh Parker (piano and vocal), Mr V. Venables and Mrs R. Clarke Thompson.

News that he was feeling fit again after his trying experiences was contained in a letter written by Gunner Bruce Paterson to his parents in Te Kuiti on January 13. He had seen Jack Evans and two Te Kuiti boys, Pettigrew and Stott, the latter going through Bardia with him. Gunner Paterson was one of the prisoners released from Bardia and he was not at all appreciative of the effect of the German biscuits upon his teeth.

A most enjoyable evening was spent in the Ohaupo Hall when Miss Maurine Shaw entertained her relatives and friends at her coming-of-age dance. Excellent music was supplied by Syd. Strange’s Syncopators and items were given by Miss Norma Scrimshaw (elocution), Mr Pat Herlihy (songs), and Mr Allen McLaren (magic). Mrs Shaw was wearing a frock of black wool georgette and Miss Maurine Shaw wore a frock of white patterned organdi with a shoulder spray of red gerberas and roses.

Cr W. (“Dinah”) Thomson sent an apology for absence from the monthly meeting of the Otorohanga County Council on Monday. Mr Thomson has had a recrudescence of trouble with his right arm following a fall from a horse some months ago and this necessitated his admission last week to the Waikato Hospital, where he subsequently underwent an operation, from which he is now making a satisfactory recovery, so much so that he may be able to leave the institution this week. At the Otorohanga County Council meeting, the chair? man (Mr V. W. Simms) made feeling reference to the misfortune which had overtaken their fellow Councillor and, on his motion, it was agreed to send a letter to Mr Thomson sympathising with him in his illness and wishing him a speedy recovery.

At a meeting of the Otorohanga Rabbit Board there were present:— Messrs B. Symes (chairman), M. Cowley, H. Rothery, C. L. Brown, J. H. Graham and W. G. Bonner. At the conclusion of the Board’s business, the chairman referred to the transfer of Mr Bonner from Otorohanga to the Te Awamutu district. On behalf of the ratepayers of the Board, he thanked Mr Bonner for his valuable services to the Board since its formation, the success of its operations being due in a large extent to him. On behalf of the members of the Board, it was his pleasure and privilege to ask Mr Bonner to accept an entree dish as a small token of appreciation of the valuable assistance he had rendered to the Board during the six years it had been in existence. He congratulated Mr Bonner on his promotion and wished him every success in his new sphere. Mr Bonner suitably acknowledged the presentation.
