Many people, knowing that the original roof is still on the old house at North Mount Egmont, have been surprised that it has never rusted or corroded. The explanation is that when the barracks on Marsland Hill, New Plymouth, were built the Crimean War, then in progress, was absorbing all available iron, and the builders were not able to procure any for the roof. Accordingly, in place of corrugated iron, they used hammeredout sheet metal, which was later transferred with the other material to the mountain house. The clerk told her that the premium would be added to her fire insurance premium when it fell due for payment in April, but if she wanted coverage between now and April she would have to pay an additional amount immediately.
