GERMAN THREAT
SWEDEN AND SWITZERLAND “The Germans have lately been threatening Sweden and Switzerland, complaining that the rest of Europe ‘is struggling to achieve the common task of reconstruction’ while they are enjoying a selfish sleep. They cannot really be as ignorant as this of the temper of the countries they oppress. The Germans have never been good at managing peoples. Alsace, with all its German blood, was more easily attached in sentiment to the French than to the Germans. This natural
German disability is aggravated by Nazi philosophy and Nazi training. The Nazis are represented abroad, by the agents of the Gestapo, men who cultivate cruelty as a fine art. Reports from the occupied countries recall Henry the Fourth’s description, the wild dog Shall flesh his tooth in every innocent. The task of conciliating Europe is beyond the capacity of the Nazis, though they may for a time hold her peoples down. On the other hand, the task of overcoming the power Germany finds in her genius for organisation is not beyond the capacity of the Allies if they can exert their utmost strength.”—“Manchester Guardian.”
