FACTORY STAFFS

STABILISATION EFFECTIVE CHEESE INDUSTRY BENEFITS The introduction of emergency regulations governing the employment of men in essential industries has had a stabilising effect on the staffing position of cheese factories throughout the Cambridge district. Prior to the introduction of the new system the cheese industry was considerably hampered by the itinerant propensities of factory employees, many of them staying on the job for only a few days. With the necessity for men to first seek the permission of the State Placement Officer before leaving the factory at which they are employed, a situation more favourable to the industry has been created. This has obviated the disadvantages of a constantly changing staff and better factory organisation has become possible. Military obligations continue to cause occasional readjustments to be made; but here, too, arrangements are being made with the District Manpower Committee that are proving entirely satisfactory to factory managers. Men are not being taken from the industry while their services are needed at the factory concerned, but arrangements are being made for the release for camp of men of military age, as the season advances and pioduction diminishes. When factories recommence operations in the spring, employees serving with the Territorial Forces will be released from camp at the discretion of the Manpower Committee.
