“STAGE SHOW”
SOLDIERS TO EUROPE Mr Frank Wolstencroft, the new President of the Trades Union Congress, speaking at a National Council of Labour demonstration in Liverpool, deprecated any effort to throw thousands of lives away on the Continent merely to provide a “ stage show." He was satisfied the Government was doing everything possible to send help to the Russian people. We did not require “ stage shows ” merely to prove that we were doing something. The lives of our men were too valuable to be wasted, and he hoped that, whatever pressure was brought to bear on the Government, it would not foolishly throw thousands of men on to any part of the Continent unless assured that there would be a chance of success. We could not afford to continue to be thrown out of every place into which we went. There had been no complaint from the Russian Government that the British Government had not given them all possible help.— London Times.
