COUNTY OF WAIPA
WORK DURING JANUARY ENGINEER’S REPORT In the course of the report which he submitted to the monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council, which is being held in Te Awamutu to-day the engineer (Mr Graham Macky) stated : Rukuria Riding: The improved junction of Rayne’s Road and Middle Road has been formed and will be sanded at an early date. The usual maintenance work has been carried out. On behalf of the New Zealand Dairy Company, a drain on the State Highway adjacent to the Rukuhia Factory, was cleaned out and enlarged for use as a shelter trench. Tuhikaramea Riding : Sanding was carried out on Koromatua Road, Reid’s Road, Gillard’s Road, Fletcher’s Road and McGregor’s Road. A portion of Reid’s Road was widened by grading off the shoulders. Smeed’s chips were carted on to the Frank-ton-Pirongia Main Highway for sealing the gap at Livingstone’s Bridge. It is not certain as to whether material will be available for this sealing, or not. Kaipaki Riding : Roads in the Kaipaki Riding to receive attention during the month included Mill Road, Parallel Road, Norrish*s Road, Berquist’s Road and the Kaipaki-Rukuhia Road. In all some 330 cubic yards of sand were used. The roads on the peat in this Riding are showing the effects of the increased truck carting, and maintenance is proving increasingly difficult. Pukekura Riding : Several roads in the Riding were patched with sand, including Grice’s Road, Reynolds’ Road, Kairangi Road, the OhaupoCambridge Main Road and Chamberlain’s Main Road. Chips have been carted on the Maungatautari Main Road to be used in repairing the shoulders of the sealing when material is available. Trenches were dug at the Pukekura Factory on behalf of the New Zealand Dairy Company. Proposals for the second coat sealing of the Leamington-Monavale section of the Te Awamutu-Cambridge Main Highway were approved and tenders called for the work. Temporary repairs were carried out to Gibbon’s Bridge on the Te Awamutu-Cam-bridge Main Highway. Proposals for a new concrete culvert on the Kairangi Road are being submitted to the Works Department for approval, but it is very doubtful if steel will be available. The small wooden bridge or culvert over the main drain on the Kairangi Road will be re-built this month.
Rangiaohia Riding : The chief work during the month was the re-surfac-ing of the Puahue Main Road with quarry chips, some 366 cubic yards being put out. Monckton’s, Cooper's and Te Rahu Roads were also patched with quarry metal. Shelter trenches were put in at the Hairini Factory for the New Zealand Dairy Company. Orakau Riding : The Arapuni section of the Kihikihi-Arapuni Main Highway was patched from Rea’s Pit; and Allen’s Road, Tiki Road and the Kihikihi-Hairini Road were patched with river gravel. The formation of the unmetalled length of the Parawera Road is in hand.
Mangapiko Riding : Burn’s Road and Bank Road were widened by shoulder grading. • Several riding roads, including Lake Road, OhaupoNgahinepouri Road, Paterangi-Ohaupo Road, Ham’s-Teddy’s Road and Mountain Road, Pirongia, were given attention. The main roads and main highways in the riding were also attended to and in all some 300 cubic yards of sand were put out as well as 75 cubic yards of crushed metal. Kakepuku Riding : The usual maintenance work was carried out during the month and some 85 cubic yards of river shingle were dumped at Te Mawhai for winter use.
