Miss Peggy Mahon, of Puahue, is at present spending a vacation at Thames.

The Rev. S. W. and Mrs Webber will return to Otorohanga this weekend from Orewa Beach.

Miss S. Roycroft, of Otorohanga, has passed her State nursing examin>a'tion in Wellington.

Jhe Rev. E. A. and Mrs Addis and family returned to Otorohanga to-day after spending a holiday at Waihi Beach.

Mrs H. J. Magill and daughter Pat, of Puniu Road, are visiting Wellington and are the guests of Mrs Jory, Hathaway Flats.

The many friends of Mr Maurice Mounsey, who has for some time been an inmate of a local private hospital, will be pleased to learn that he is progressing favourably.

Mr C. B. Steele, of Auckland, who has been staying with his daughter, Mrs R. Nicholson, of Pukeatua, is in Te .Awamutu to-day on his return journey.

The National Party candidate, Mrs A. N. Grigg, was the only nomination for the Mid-Canterbury seat rendered vacant by the death of Major A. N. Grigg in action in the Middle East.

Mr H. McChesney, assistant senior inspector of schools, has been appointed senior inspector in Auckland from March 1, in succession to Mr A. Bain, who has resigned. Mr A. F. D. East has been promoted to assistant senior inspector in Auckland.

Nominations for the Temuka seat, rendered vacant by the death of Mr T. D. Burnett, closed on Wednesday. There are two candidates, Mr J. Ackland (National Party) and Mr D. C. Davie (Independent). The byelection will be held on February 7.

Mrs D. W. Mountain, of Maniapoto Street, Otorohanga, has received a cablegram from her husband, Gunner Des. Mountain, who is safe and well after the Libyan campaign. He returned to the base camp on New Year’s Eve.

At the quarterly meeting of the Te Awamutu Methodist Church yesterday, Mr J. T. Johnson, with Mr Hall Raine as substitute, was appointed the circuit’s delegate to the annual Methodist Conference to be held at Wellington, opening on February 19th.

The death has occurred of Mr Frederick William Kemp, aged 70, farmer and land agent, of Hamilton. Mr Kempt spent his early life farming in Canterbury and Southland. He lived in the Waikato for 28 years and took a keen interest in all branches of sport. He is survived by Mrs Kemp, three sons and one daughter.

Mr and Mrs H. Mandeno, of Hairini, have received advice from their son, Corporal George Mandeno, that he is a prisoner of war, unwounded and well. Most surprising, the news is contained in a post card written on June 26 in a transit camp in Crete. It is the first official information received of the Corporal’s safety, although private advice received had recently conveyed this reassuring intelligence.

Appointments of teachers, made by the Auckland Education Board on Wednesday, include the following:— Secondary assistant: Miss F. O. Hunter, 8.A., Cambridge District High School; infant mistress: Miss E_. Minns, Otorohanga District High; assistant mistress: Miss A. I. M. Logan, Arohena; Miss B. I. Thompson, Kawhia; Miss E. M. Baker and Miss S. N. Campbell, Otorohanga District High. War appointments include: Miss J. H. G. Bray, sole teacher at Ngaroma; assistant mistress, Miss G. M. Thompson, Te Awamutu District High.
