TE AWAMUTU COURIER Printed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays FRIDAY, 23rd JANUARY, 1942 LESS PETROL IN FUTURE?
’• We ought to have been more severe nfpnths ago, but we did not want to deprive people of some pleasure,” said the Minister for National Service (the Hon. R. Semple), speaking about petrol supplies to the Emergency Precautions Services executive at Ashburton on Monday. “We will have to edme down more severely still,” he said, referring to future petrol supplies.
WITH this blunt, authoritative warning that petrol supplies in the future may be still further severely curtailed, Mr Stnipie should use his influence to hqve (he administrative side thoroughly, overhauled and renovated. The burden of many grievances heard in Te Awamutu at the present juncture is that the sacrifices involved in the existing restrictions are not being equitably shared. Anomalies are bound to occur when sudden and very drastic measures are taken to deal with -an ■ abnormal position, but it should be the business of the authorities responsible to see that these are ironed out as quickly as possible. People do not mind bearing hardships as long as they are satisfied that others are carrying their fair share of them. W’hen, either through faults in administration or some abuse of privilege, the load is unevenly spread, complaints are bound to multiply. A thorough review of the licenses is desirable; too much has been taken for granted in the past, and this is where the cause for irritation and complaint undoubtedly arises.
