Private motorists and the traffic department of Wellington City Council face a problem which is going to be difficult of solution. There are 7500 private garages in Wellington, but car registrations within the boundaries of the city total 14,000. With trucks and other motor vehicles added, the total is 19,000. It is well known that many owners use the streets as an open-air garage, and they must be thinking hard what to do with their vehicles now that there is no more petrol available to run them. Owing to the hilly nature of Wellington, and the steep sections on which houses are built, it is not possible to provide garages in many places, and it is stated that the problem has the city traffic authorities baffled.
