THE SKIP HINTS FOR YOUNG PLAYERS (By ‘ Scorer ”) We all know the “ make up ” of the ideal skip, having a full range of shots and the happy knack of getting the best out of his team. The skip should study his opponent and take advantage of any particular weakness noticed. Some skips have a preference for a special distance, and consistently ask for this length of head. Consider the drive ability of the other skip. If he does not care for the drive you do not have to put so many bowls to the rear. Over-running the Head after driving is a common fault; drop arms to sides and relax before attempting the draw with second bowl. Don’t “kid” to players of your rink. Better to remain silent when they put up' a. bad bowl. Then when, later ap-„ probation comes they know you are sincere. Skips should not stop jack in the running when put up by lead, but allow jack to run itself out. Give directions plainly. A yard through the head could mean anything. To finish a yard beyond the jack is pre-> cise and cannot be misunderstand. Work out a set policy. After a few heads you should know the peculiarities of the rink. "Don’t try to master a bad hand. Play the good one. It pays bigger dividends. Persevering with a bad hand has cost many a team tbe chance of success. Finally, play to the rules without pinpricking on minor points.
