Mrs J. C. Sawers, of Remuera, is the guest of Mrs A. P. Robinson, of Roto-o-Rangi.

Mrs McNicol, of Auckland, has been the guest of Mrs S. C. B. Macky, Paterangi.

Mr H. Williamson, M.R.C.V.S., late of London, is the guest of his daughter, Mrs C. Burkett, Pokuru.

Mrs D. F. Laurenson, of Welling ton, is the guest of Mr F. W- J Wilkening, Pokuru.

Mrs J. G. Sutherland and her daughter, Miss Jean Sutherland, of Kihikihi, have returned from a holiday in Rotorua.

Mrs A. Kilgour, of Palmerston North, and her daughter Ngaere, are at present the guests of Mr and Mrs T. P. Rogers, Kio Kio..

Mrs A. H. Laybourn, who is at present visiting her daughter, Mrs N. G- Check, of Auckland, will return home on Monday.

Sergeant W. Feisst, of Otorohanga, who is training at Hopu Hopu, has received notification to proceed tq Waiouru on 29th September for instruction in tank warfare.

Private Joe Hynes, late of Otorohanga, who was wounded in Crete and taken prison of war, has now had to have one leg amputated. He is in hospital in Athens, Greece.

Lieutenant Alan Simms, son of Mr V. W. Simms, Otewa, has been promoted to the rank of captain. He left New Zealand with the Second Echelon.

In the latest casualtv list it is announced that Private Daniel Leslie Harpur, whose next of kin is Mr J. Harpur, of Te Awamutu, is a prisoner of war. He was previously reported missing.

Messenger Frank Horan, of the local Post and Telegraph staff, has been promoted to the training school at Auckland as a cadet, and will leave for the northern city on Wednesday next. t

Approval of the nomination of Mr F. E. Carter, of Paeroa, as National Party candidate for the Thamles seat at the general election has been given by the national executive of the party.

Tne engagement is announced between Lieutenant James Gladwyn Wynyard, N.Z.E.F. (overseas), second son of Lieut.-Colonel and Mrs J. G. Wynyard and Phyllis Gwendolene, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs F. G. Seccombe, Princes St., Hamilton.

Lieutenant A. G. Hultquist, sitting member for the Bay of Plenty electorate, who is at present serving overseas with the Middle East Forces, has again been nominated as the official Labour candidate for the Bay of Plenty electorate.

Mrs W. Mathews, of Mahoe Streethas received advice that her nephew Sergeant-Pilot William Robert Dil, has died from injuries received in aii operations over England. He was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. J. Dil of Birkenhead.

The death occurred in the Waikato Hospital on Wednesday of Mr John Brown, of Arohena, aged 51 years. Mr Brown was employed for 21 years as bush foreman by Simyth Bros, and Boryer, Limited, of Te Awamutu. He served on Gallipoli with the Maori Battalion of the First New Zealand Expeditionary Force.

The many friends of Mr James Howie, of the local Post and Telegraph Department who has been laid aside for the past two months with illness, will be pleased to learn that he is now able to be about again and will trust, now that an improvehas set in, that he will be speedily restored to his accustomed good health.

It was announced in the House of Representatives on Wednesday by the Prime Minister, the Right Hon. PFraser, that the Government would be represented at the International Labour Conference in New York by the Minister of Lands, the Hon. F. Langstone. The Minister is in the United States on a Government mission.

Private Alan George Johnston, son of Mr F. Johnston, of Abbotsford Street, Hamilton, who has been reported presumed dead, was educated at the Hamilton High School, and before enlisting was engaged in farm ing at Ngahinepouri. Corporal W. F. Johnston, a brother, was recently reported a prisoner of war in Greece while Lieutenant I. E. Johnston, another brother, is at Waiouru with the tanks A third brother, Sergeant I. L. Johnston, is stationed at the Cambridge territorial camp.

News was received from Daventry last week-end that Pilot Officer G. W. Hamlin, serving with the Royal New; Zealand Air Force, had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Pilot Officer Hamlin, D.F.C.. is a son of Mr and Mrs W. Hamlin of Remuera, Auckland, and formlerlj of Te Kuiti. Mr Hamlin (senior) was accountant in the Bank of New Zealand at Te Kuiti for several years Pilot Officer Halmlin, who is 22 years of age, was educated at the Waitara School and Nelson College, and later joined the staff of the Bank of New Zealand at New Plymouth. In Januar” of last ”ear he entered the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and left eight months later after being commissioned at Wigram. A member of the Ne/w Zealand Bomber Squadron, he recently completed his thirtysecond raid over enemy territory. Of the flights, he made ten as second pilot and 22 as captain of the bomber. Now he is serving on the instructional staff.
