Miss Phyllis North returned to town on Sunday after a visit to Wanganui.
Mr and Mrs J. A. Carlson, of Dannevirke, are at present the guests of Mr and Mrs Andrew Brown, of Puniu Road.
The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, will arrive at Auckland by the Anzac Clipper from San Francisco on Friday, after his mission abroad.
Mrs H. L. Marsh, of Mahoe Street, is at present visiting New Plymouth, in consequence of the critical illness of her mother, Mrs E. Tunneycliffe, who is one of the very old residents of Taranaki.
Mr K. D. Cossgrove, of the Auckland Area Manpower Committee staff, has been appointed secretary to the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board, Hamilton, in succession to Mr G. J A. Grace, who is entering the Army.
Miss E. M. Robb, Hamilton, has retired from the Post and Telegraph Department after 36 years’ service. For the last six years Miss Robb has been inspecting supervisor of telephone exchanges throughout New Zealand.
At the monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu District High School Committee on Monday evening last, Mr G. S. Hall tendered his resignation from the Committee, explaining that his health and war conditions made this step necessary. He thanked the chairman and the Committee for friendly co-operation during many years, and expressed his appreciation of unfailing courtesy and good fellowship. The chairman (Mr G. B. Melrose) regretted Mr Hall’s inability to continue in office and thanked him for his long service. The Committee recorded their appreciation and wished Mr Hall better health and some relief from the burdens falling upon him.
The appointment of six members of the Legislative Council was announced by the acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. W. Nash, on Monday. They are: The Hon. T. Bloodworth (Auckland), the Hon. E. R. Davis (Auckland), the Hon. J. McLeod (Taranaki), Mr Walter Black (Nelson), Mr F. G. Young (Auckland), Mr P. J. O’Kane (Frasertown, Hawke’s Bay). The first three are reappointed and the others are new members. Mr F. G. Young is secretary of the Auckland Hotel Workers’ and Restaurant Employees’ Union. Mr Patrick Joseph O’Kane, J.P., has been president of the Frasertown branch of the New Zealand Labour Party since 1937. Formerly secretary of an employees’ organisation covering works of Thos. Borthwick and Sons, he retired in 1920 to take up sheepfarming in the Wairoa district. PIRONGIA PERSONALS. (Our Own Correspondent) Friends will be very pleased to hear that Mrs George Owen is out of the hospital and is improving steadily. Lieutenant J. R. McGruther, who was wounded in Crete, arrived home last Tuesday morning. Mr and Mrs Charles Ormsby, of Auckland, are returning home to-day after a pleasant holiday with Mr and Mrs Robert Ormsby, of Kawhia Road. Miss Buchanan, of Canada and formerly of Ireland, is the guest of Mr J. Buchanan, Mountain Road. Mrs G. Bainbridge, who has been away for several weeks, is now home again.
