MOTOR CYCLING

MEETING CANCELLED. TRACK TOO GREASY. Unfortunately, owing to the incle mency of the weather and the state of the track, the executive of the Waipa Motor Cycle Grass Track Club had no option but to cancel the speedway meeting fixed for yesterday. On Saturday afternoon . while the officials were energetically mowing the track, remarks were made upon the splendid hard-surface and that the mowers were raising a slight dust—a good augury for a fast meeting and shattered records. However, Sunday morning broke showery and misty—by 8.30 a.m. the track was a duck pond. The executive then decided to. cancel the meeting—lYA was immediately informed—but nothing was heard over the air. The cyclists and midget-car owners were then notified. However, by this time, the Auckland and Huntly men were already on their way—being stopped at .Te Awamutu. They were very disappointed—as by this time the weather had, cleared and was fine and sunny. After talking things over they decided to look the track over, as having come so far they were reluctant to gb back without having tried their bikes out. By this time there was quite a gathering of cars. So the more energetic of the mechanics decided to have a few trial runs round the by now rapidly drying, but still exceedingly greasy, track. The spectators were then treated to some excellent and clever riding—although to the majority of them it would seem more like slide- and glide trick riding. As this was gradually drying the track and making it more ridable— Morgan and Seed, who were almost “frothing at the mouth” decided to have a few rounds. After- two or three trial rounds, during which these two men showed just how a dangerous and tricky track can be made to look very easy and safe, Dame Nature decided to take a hand in it once more, rain falling hehvily. This time the track was a proper quagmire, which wrote “finish.” Both Mdrgan and Seed were very disappointed, as this meant that they could not finalize their competition this season. The Club is very keen to secure these two men for their opening spring meeting as the challenge clash between them will be eagerly sought after by other clubs. In concluding the season the executive of the Waipa Motor Cycle Grass Track Club wish to thank all the generous donors who helped to make this splendid speedway track possible—also the various officials who helped in making the use of it such a success and to urge them to further efforts to make it next spring—not only the premier quarter-mile grass track of the Auckland Province, but of the whole of New Zealand—and the mecca for all the quarter-mile championships. If sufficient inducement and backing is forthcoming, the Club proposes to further improve both the track and the grounds and so make a first-class speedway worthy of our boys when they come back.
