JAPAN’S MILLIONS

HUGE POPULATION. The census of the Japanese Empire taken in October, 1940, showed the population to total 105,000,000, an increase of 6,000,000 on the 1935 figure. The’rate of increase declined from 8.2 per cent to 6.5 per cent. It is urgently necessary, says the Tokio Nichi Nichi Shimbun, that the Government should take measures for an increased population. The population of Japan proper, the paper says, totalled 73,000,000. Tokyo’s population was 6,778,000, compared with 5,875,000 in 1935, so that it was now the world’s second largest city. ■
