VALUE OF MONEY
ASTRONOMICAL FIGURES. “We are to-day apt to lose all sense of the value of money. Where formerly we thought in terms of millions; Publid expenditure has reached, as we know, astronomical figures, and the daily cost of the war has ceased to amaze or stagger us. But that cost should remind us of the paramount duties to save and to lend. We must all restrict, not expand, our expenditure. Every man who to-day signs a
needless cheque is a friend of Germany. Every man who to-day worships the god of luxury is the enemy of his own country. Formerly extra, vagance was folly; to-day it is a crime. Formerly to lend to the State was conceivable—to-day it is imperative. This is a matter to be settled between each man and his own conscience. Let us save till, as a friend of mine in London put it, it hurts.”-—Lord Justice Alness.
