“ The shortage of shipping is undoubtedly affecting us,” said the Prime Minister yesterday. Many of the ships normally trading to New Zealand have been requisitioned by the British authorities.
New Zealand’s war expenditure is stated to be £650,000 per month.
The monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday lapsed as a quorum was not present at the appointed hour.
Hon. W. Fraser visited this district on Wednesday. Kakepuku settlers advgpced many matters affecting loading in that district, and asked that the area be transferred from West Taupo county. At Te Mawhai a request was made for a new road to Te Kawa. The Waipa County Council put forward several roading proposals. Parawera settlers asked for county control in place of the non-operative West Taupo county. Te Rau-a-Moa settlers asked for the completion of the road to Te Kawa. At Oparau and Kawhia the Minister was urged to consider the opening of a road to link Kawhia with the main road at Oparau.
The Empire Theatre in Te Awamutu was officially opened by Mr J. A. Young, M P., last Wednesday evening. Mr H. Y. Collins, chairman of directors, presided at the ceremony, which was largely attended.
