It is not generally known that the light from a standard candle has been observed from a distance of 16 miles away under clear atmospheric conditions. It must also be remembered that a light which may appear indistinct or even invisible to the naked eye takes on a very different aspect when viewed through a telescope. This is emphasised in connection with the lighting restrictions which are at the present time in operation in New Zealand coastal towns.
