PATRIOTIC ACTIVITES
PUKEATUA SETTLERS. KNITTING CIRCLE FORMED. Since the outbreak of hostilities and the decision to send our young men overseas, all soldiers belonging to or having lived in this district have been given a farewell and presentation by the settlers. Parcels have also been packed and forwarded by a public committee elected for that purpose. Recently the members of the Women’s Division have felt that these were not a sufficient effort on behalf of our district and at a meeting .on Friday last a Knitting Circle was formed and a considerable quantity of wool dis tributed. This wool was bought from the proceeds of a card evening arranged by Mesdames Reynold, Anderson, Sharrock and Weal. A recent concert and dance priced by a bring-
and-buy sale and a number of competitions was most successful, slightly over £26 being cleared. This was divided between the Women’s Division’s Centennial effort (the erection of a suitable fence confronting the War Memorial), the Red Cross and the fund for the support of the Queen of the South and a sum to purchase further supplies of wool. Several other schemes for the raising of further sums of money were decided upon at Friday’s meeting. The concert mentioned above was most enjoyable and was almost entirely the performance of our local residents. The programme opened with a pianoforte solo by Mrs Tervit, followed by two short camp-fire concerts by different groups, a tap dance by Miss Noreen Reynolds, vocal solos by Mrs Tervit, vocal duets by Mrs Earwaker and Mr E. Perrott and Mrs Lowry and Mr Reynolds and a couple of recitations by Mr E. Perrott. An exceptionally entertaining farce concluded a very enjoyable concert.
The young ladies entrusted with the difficult roles, acquitted themselves surprisingly well and the whole performance depicting the social life of Bath, England, about seventy years ago was really delightful. The following were the performers: Misses June Ferguson, Joyce Perrott, Joan Anderson, Noreen Reynolds and Marjorie Holmes. The following were the prizewinners in the various competitions: Cake donated by Mrs Reynolds, Mrs Mclntyre, Ngahape; ham donated by Mrs Crook, Mr D. Johnson; turkey donated by Mrs M. Rumbles, Master Teddy Weal; lady’s handbag donated by Mr L. G. Armstrong (Te Awamutu), Mrs McKee.
