Licenses may not be obtained for the importation from any country of motor vehicles, either assembled or unassembled, under the fourth period (July 1 to December 31) schedule issued by the Minister of Customs, the Hon. W. Nash, this week. The importation of spirits and wines is subject to a 50 per cent reduction. Hitherto importation has been unrestricted under a special arrangement whereby a portion of the necessary funds for payment was retained in the Dominion. In the case of wheat, fresh lemons, bananas, grapefruit, mandarins and oranges, which are included in the list, imports will be made by the Government. The introduction of a subsidy on certain imported phosphatic fertilisers which have arrived in the Dominion since the outbreak of war and also on certain expected arri vals, was announced by the Ministei of Agriculture, the Hon. W. Lee < Martin, to-night. This subsidy is in addition to that at present being paid by the Government on certain m materials used in the manufacture of superphosphate. The main lines concerned in the new subsidy ar-' North African phosphate, Walpole guano and Seychelles guano and basic slag. The Minister said the rate would not in any case exceed 7s 6d a ton. Where the actual increase in c.iJ. and g. cost was below 7s 6d a ton, based on an average similai cost before the outbreak of war, only the actual increase a ton would b<> paid. “As the object of this subsidy is lowering costs to farmer consumers, the Department of Agriculture will require to be satisfied that the benefit of the subsidy is wholly passed on to the farmers,” said the Minister. “The department will communicate with importers and will then arrange appropriate subsidy payments to merchants on receipt of a declaration.” Family remedy for coughs and colds: Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure.
