Mrs Douglas Wiseman, Teasdale Street, has returned home from a holiday at Takapuna Beach.
During the absence on annual leave of Mr A. H. Laybourn, Mr R. E. Hunter, of Frankton Junction, is acting as postmaster at Te Awamutu.
Mir and Mrs J. A. Sutherland, of Kihikihi, left this morning on a motoring holiday, and they intend visiting the Centennial Exhibition.
Mrs N. Rossiter and her little daughter Joy, with Mrs W. Tyrrell and her two daughters, left last Sunday morning by car for Takapuna, where they intend to spend a holiday.
Mr and Mrs J. Sklenars, of Mjangapiko, have gone to Wellington for a few days, intent upon visiting the Exhibition; and Mr Sklenars also hopes to see the Centennial Cup race at Trentham to-morrow.
The engagement is announced of Miss Margaret (Peggy) Henderson, second daughter of Mr and Mirs J. Henderson, Te Kawa, to Mr David (Snowy) McFde, youngest son of Mr and Mrs R. McFie, Kawhia, and formerly of Te Awamutu. >
Miss Zeta Leany, a popular young pianist from Palmerston North, returned home yesterday.. after spending a two weeks’ holiday visit to Te Awamutu as the guest of her cousin, Mrs Albert Taylor, Mahoe Street.
At the Borough Council meeting on Monday evening feeling reference was made to the continued indisposition of Cr A. Rowan, and he was again granted leave of absence. Councillors expressed sympathy with him in his protracted indisposition.
The engagement is announced between Kenneth Farrer, younger son of Mr and Mrs C. W. Rickit, Te Awamutu, and Mary Victoria, third daughter of Mr and Mrs J. A. Maxwell, Epsom, formerly of Te Awamutu.
The latest Gazette announces the appointment, as second lieutenants of the military forces, of Messrs James G. McClennan, of Te Awamutu, and James H. Lawton, of Hamilton (and formerly of Te Awamutu). They will be posted to the Second Medium Battery, Hamilton.
Major G. Dittmer, M.8.E., M.C., N.Z.S.C., who has been appointed commanding officer of the 28th Maori Battalion of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, is a former Hamilton officer. When holding the rank of captain, he was area officer of the No. 4 (Hamilton) area about two years ago.
Recent visitors to the Centennial Exhibition from Te Awamutu and district who have signed the official visitors’ book include L. J. and Netta Edwards, Allie Turkington, Ruby Oldham, M. B. Oldham, H. and K. Holt, Alice Ross, Jean Hooper, Marjorie Ross, J. M. Mexted. R. Gibbs, I. P. Roberts, D. Baillie, J. Millen, P. Gee. C. Boyd, and M. C. Rosemergy.
When it was announced that Colonel J. Hargest, M.P. for Awarua, had been appointed to command the fifth Infantry Brigade, in the Second Echelon for service overseas, a local returned soldier remarked that if the present-day soldiers have as great an appreciation of Colonel Hargest as have those who served with him in the 1914-18 war, there will be no doubt about his success as a leader. Colonel Hargest, D. 5.0., M.C., V.D., has a fine record in military matters over a long term of years, and is looked upon as a “man’s man,” by the returned soldiers who know him.
An old and well beloved resident of the Stanway (Manawatu) district, Mrs Rose Pilcher, passed away recently after a long illness at the home of her daughter, Mrs Robinson, Taihape. Her husband predeceased her several years ago. Mrs Pilcher arrived in New Zealand with her parents in the sailing ship Karmatic in 1875. After her marriage she lived in Otaki, then Halcombe and subsequently went to live on Makino Road where she resided for a great number of years. Mrs Pilcher is best remembered for her work during the Great War for which she received one of the five special medals sent to New Zealand by the late King George. Of the large family of twelve children, nine are still living, one of whom is Mr John Pilcher, of the Otorohanga district.
