CRICKET
HAWKE CUP CHALLENGE MATCH. In the first Hawke Cup cricket match, this season, commenced at Seddon Park, Hamilton, yesterday, between Taranaki (challengers) and Waikato, Taranaki was dismissed for the small total of 83 in the first innings. Waikato had scored 64 runs for Ithe loss of three wickets when stumps were drawn. Play was not commenced until 2.30 in the afternoon on account of the wet state of the iwicket. Taranaki’s first innings opened sensationally, two wickets being down with no runs scored. H. W. Barker and C. Lash! were the most successful batsmen, while R. Cloughi and J. D. Bright divided the bowling honours. Clough took five wickets for 33 runs and Bright five for 30. Top scorers for Taranaki were Barker 30 and Lash (not out) 25. Waikato’s two batsmen at present unbeaten are T. Lyon 24 and A. J. Aitken 12. There is little likelihood of any play to-day. TEAMS FOR SATURDAY.
