TREASURE SHIP
FORTUNE OF LOUIS XVI. A piece of timber from the wreck of the French treasure ship Telemaque, which sank in the estuary of the Seine in 1790, was brought up from the river bed the other day. An anchor chain, found by a diver from the salvage ship, was also brought to the surface, but the rope to which it was attached snapped before it could be secured.
The hulk of the Telemaque is believed to contain treasure worth millions of pounds, including the private fortune of Louis XVI. During the last century it was frequently asserted that the treasure also included Marie Antoinette’s famous diamond necklace.
The Telemaque, commanded by an English skipper, left Rouen on January 3, 1790. After eluding ships belonging to the revolutionaries she was caught in a gale and sank 50 yards from Quillebeuf lighthouse. Three attempts were made during the 19th century to recover the treasure.
In the operations now taking place holes are being made in the wreck to obtain samples of its contents.
