EXIT THE CZECHS
HUMOUR IN TRAGEDY. They took the defeat of their country with amazing fortitude. S. even said to me: “You are more despondent than we are; you must take it with humour!” With humour! That seemed remarkable from a man who had made the almost legendary march of the Czech legions through Siberia, who had been an intimate collaborator of Benes for twenty years, and who now saw the whole world for which he had worked fallen in ruins. But I was several times surpiresd to come across evidence in these tragic days of a sense of humour which I have never before noticed in the Czechs. A popular joke that went round was: “Have you heard? The Government have received a new ultimatum.” “Yes, from whom?” “From the Eskimos. They demand the immediate annexation of the Prague Ice stadium!”
Another was: “Little boy, where are you going on your scooter?” “Round the Republic.” “Yes, but what are going to do in the afternoon?” Alexander Henderson in Foreign Correspondent.
