.THE JERSEY BREED

WELL-KNOWN JUDGE GIVES DEMONSTRATION. KEEN DISTRICT INTEREST. The Te Awamutu Jersey Club has always been prominent in its endeavour to popularise the breed and to improve it, and in this connection it has from time to time arranged for demonstrations by recognised judges of the breed. The latest demonstration took place at Mr Hamilton Allen’s farm, near Kihikihi, last Friday, and, the demonstrator was Mr H. J. Lan-,, caster, the well-known show-ring / judge and breeder, of Glen Oroua,’ Manawatu, who was visiting relatives in this district.

There was a very good attendance, including splendid representation of senior boys from the Te Awamutu District High School, and from, the Te Awamutu and Pokuru Young Farmers’ Clubs. At the conclusion of the address, a' judging competition was arranged for the schoolboys, competitors required to estimate points of a cow exhibited for their inspection, and these compared with the judge’s points. The winner proved to be Murray Lee, with D. Clements second and George Crotty third. Later (after the boys had departed) another competition was held, and J. D. Donaldson proved to be the winner, with S. Langdale second.

Afternoon tea was served by the ladies, after which Mr Hamilton Allen, president of the Jersey Club, thanked Mr Lancaster for his wonderfully interesting address and demonstration, and said the Club executive was very gratified at the fine attendance.

Mr Cyril Eyre, president of the Te Awamutu Y.F.C., and Mr Percy Ray, president of the Pokuru Y.F.C., also expressed appreciation on behalf of their organisations.

Mr ’Lancaster, replying, said it was always a, pleasure to an enthusiast to meet other enthusiasts or to imbue others with an appreciation of the many excellences of the Jersey.
