MOTORING IN CANADA. Out of a population of 11,000,000 in Canada, resigstration licenses were issued for 1,394,953 motor vehicles in 1938. This was an increase of 75,151 licenses, or 5.7 per cent over 1937. Of this total 1,159,604 licenses were issued for passenger cars, 220..114 for motor trucks, 1980 for motor buses, 12,073 for motor cycles and 1082 for other motor vehicles. It has been computed that there were 9.7 persons to every passenger car in 1938 as compared with 10.1 in 1937, or, taking all motor vehicles into consideration, the average was 8.1 in 1938 as compared with 8.4 in 1937. Canada strictly enforces the law which provides that only competent and licensed persons can drive motor vehicles. During the year 1,471,230 were granted personal drivers’ licenses, in addition to 352,414 chauffeurs’ licenses issued. One of the features of motoring in Canada has been the development of the use of the motor trailer, particularly those equipped as regular homes. In 1938 there were 62,971 trailers licensed as compared with 54,011 in 1937.
