IWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
AS REPORTED IN WAIPA POST, AUGUST 11, 1914. Most of the reading space is occupied with condensed reports of the principal happenings in the Great War, which has been in progress for a week. Liege remains unconquered. German submarines attacked a British squadron. The French in Alsace heavily repulsed the Germans. The London bank rate is reduced to five per cent., and the war insurance rate to four guineas per cent. In the presence of about 750 people the high pressure water supply was officially turned on in Te Awamutu on Saturday, and there is now an adequate supply of water for a population of 10,000 people. The function took place at the junction of Alexandra, Arawata and Sloane Streets, the public, for a time at least, obtaining a splendid view of the display from the terrace which forms the main approach to the post office. The school children marched to the site in a body, the Fire Brigade was also present in uniform, and gave its first public demonstration.
A public meeting has been convened by a number of responsible citizens for the purpose of arranging assistance for the expenditionary force. A full attendance of farmers and townspeople is requested. The last meet of the season in Te Awamutu district of the Waikato Hunt was held at “Woodstock,” the homestead of Mr C. Storey, on Wednesday. There were several good runs, and one kill resulted.
The ladies’ stroke competition on the local golf links last Saturday was won by Miss Aitken, with a card of 84. Others were Miss Collins 87 (20). Miss Clarke 98 (20), and Mrs Fortescue 103 (scr.).

. Te Awamutu Town Board, discussing water supply services, undertook to supply the State school free of charge. The chairman, Mr A. S. Wallace, stated that Kihikihi residents were to discuss the question of obtaining supply from Te Awamutu The Board decided to offer supply at 9d per 1000 gallons, at the Town Board boundary, through a 4in. pipe. Te Awamutu Golf Club’s draw for the first round of the knock-out competition is: Men: Young v. Empson, Morrison v. Cruickshank, Fortescue v. Burchell, Morton v. Jeffery, Luxford v. Dr. Henderson, Ahier v. T. Mclnnes, Baddeley v. Thomas, Dr. Reekie v. Cox. Johns v. A. Mclnnes. Ladies: Mrs Fortescue v. Miss Collins, Miss Graham v. Miss Clarke, Miss Aitken v. Miss Taylor.
