HOCKEY VICTORY

WAIPA DEFEATS RODNEY. MARGIN OF TWO GOALS. In a fast and open game in which the local team held the upper hand throughout but lost many scoring opportunities through over eagerness and hard hitting near the circle Waipa defeated Rodney by two goals to nil at Albert Park on Saturday. The teams were: Rodney; M. Neely, B. Andrews, H. Brooker, C. Ashton, E. Phillips, D. Thompson, E. Ashton, K. Meikeljohn, S. Smith, J. Becroft, A. Henderson: andWaipa:—J. Smith, C. Taylor, A. Spiers, C. Kelehy, J. Shpw, R. Spiers, D. Hancock, R. Hutson, V. Hawkins, J. Sinnott, F. Battson. QUICK OPENING GOAL. The game opened with a Waipa attack but the ball went behind and a little later a good centre from J. Smith enabled C. Taylor to chase the ball into the net within three minutes of the opening. Waipa 1, Rodney. 0. A fast run by the Rodney right wing was stopped by V. Hawkins, and later a similar attack from the left had Waipa in difficulties but Battson and Sinnott were’ equal to the occasion and play transferred to the Rodney circle where a penalty corner was forced. Over-hard hitting at this stage by the Te Awamutu forwards spoiled several promising movements. Two attacks in front of the Waipa goal were (cleared by Sinnott and Hawkins with strong hits and R. Spiers sent his forwards away for C. Taylor to miss the goal by yards with a hard shot. The Waipa halves were letting the Rodney forwards "et little of the ball until E. Phillips broke through. Sinnott cleared at the expense of a penalty corner and soon after Battson cleared from close in. A fast run and centre by J. Smith allowed I. Shaw on the other wing a difficult shot at goal. A return attack by Rodney was stopped in the Waipa goal by Battson. Play going to the other end, Rodney was luckily saved from a difficult situation by Henderson in goal and Ashton relieved with a fine clearing hit only for C. Taylor to make a fast solo run, but he was ’unable to goal. Several times R. Spiers sent his forwards away but the attacks broke down through over-hard hitting near the circle. A good movement between A. Spiers and Taylor saw the latter narrowly miss with a fast reverse shot at goal. A sudden attack was brdken up by J. Becroft and half time came with the score unaltered. RAPID CHANGES OF PLAY. The second half opened at a very fast pace, nlay transferring rapidly from one end to another both Neeley and Phillips making fast runs. The Rodney goal-keeper fell in front of the ball to stop a likely shot by Keheley. Play was suspended owjng to an injury to A. Spiers. On resuming, Waipa pressed hard but fine defence by E. Ashton and Henderson kept them out. Waipa were constantly losing chances through over-hitting when approaching the circle and the

passes to the wings were far too hard. i An attack by Rodney was broken up by a hard kick by Battson. In another hot Waipa attack Keheley swung a good chance outside the goal post. A sharp attack from quarter way by A. Spiers and Taylor ended in Spiers turning a neat reverse shot into the goal. Waipa 2, Rodney 0. LOST OPPORTUNITIES. An excellent scoring chance by a Rodney break-away was pulled up kicks, and Battson broke up two further attacks without conceding a corner. A fast run and centre by Smith gave A. Spiers a chance which he just failed to turn into the net* Another attempt by him was smothered in the goal-mouth by Henderson and from a following 'corner a very hard drive at goal by Taylor was disallowed. A clever and fast clearance by R. Spiers saved Waipa on the edge of the circle. The game ended without further alteration. Waipa 2, Rodney 0. The umpires were Messrs. R. Hinton and C. J. Spiers. To each one he put very searching questions so as to make sure that the boy would take an interest imhis work. “Well, my lad,” he said to one bright-looking youth, “what would you do with a thousand pounds?” The lad scratched his head. “I don’t know, sir,” he replied; “I didn’t expect so much for a i start. 1 *
