WAIPA RUGBY UNION

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS. A meeting of the Waipa Rugby Union’s management committee on Monday evening was presided over by Mr R. S. Sinclair, and there were present Messrs G. Buckley, P. Stephens, T. Bowden, I. Petersen, J. L. Callaghan, I. Roberts, H. Parker and F. J. Chunn. In the absence of the secretary his duties were taken over by Mr Chunn. In the„ matter of the indecent act which took place at Albert Park, Messrs Callaghan and Haselden reported that they interviewed the police, who thought that there would be no difficulty in patrolling the park between numbers one and two grounds. They had expressed their appreciation of the matter having been brought under their notice, and had assured the Union of their co-operation on Saturdays. Although R. Jackson, who played for Rovers on the 13th inst., had been approached and had given an assurance that he would produce a clearance as a League player, this had not been done.

Mr Petersen reported that letters had been sent to Hamilton and Whatawhata, but no replies had yet been received.

Considerable discussion took plaqe, and Mr Stephens advocated that a much firmer attitude should be taken in the re-instatement of League players.

A motion, moved by Mr Sinclair and seconded by Mr Stephens, that until such time that evidence is apparent that the player, R. Jackson, is eligible to play Rugby football, the Rovers Club be advised that this player cannot play, was carried. It was reported that the full 17 nep jerseys have been returned in good order.

Mr Callaghan reported that with Mr Gifford he had inspected the grandstand with the intention of providing a room for the St. John Ambulance, and that all the rooms were occupied. They had also met Mr Telfer, of the Young Men’s Institute, with the object of securing that organisation’s co-operation.

After some discussion it was resolved to hold the matter in abeyance until the next meeting. It was decided to raise the third grade insurance levy from 3d to 6d a game, and that the fourth grade players should pay 3d a game. Benefits for the third grade will continue as at present, and the fourth grade are to receive 7s 6d a week for a maximum of six weeks plus doctor’s expenses of one guinea. Letters of thanks for their acceptance of honorary surgeons are to be sent to Drs L. S. Rogers and K. N. Hiskens.

Matamata’s challenge for the Cucksey Cup was referred to the Junior Advisory Board. Permission was granted J. Emery and A. Fitzell to play in the Otorohanga Rugby Union. A letter, with plans of the flood lighting system, was received from the Matamata Union. Mr Chunn moved that in the case of junior teams travelling to Oparau the management committee undertake transport on the same terms and conditions that apply to the Stag teams travelling; also that any subsidy coming from Oparau for travelling teams be accepted by the Union.—The motion was seconded by Mr Bowden ahd carried; and members expressed their appreciation of the Oparau Club's keenness to have games. Mention was made by Mr Bowden that the Pirongia teams were willing to finance their own travelling to Oparau. The treasurer reprimanded those who were responsible for the collection of insurance moneys, and he was instructed to refuse to accept insurance cards unless they were set out as required by the Waipa Rugby Union. Mr Sinclair explained that two insurance cards were required from each team, one for the referee and one to be handed to the secretary or treasurer of the Union with the insurance money.

Delegates expressed the . opinion that a firmer attitude should be adopted towards those responsible for the money, and rule 39 of the Union was quoted by Mr Sinclair, which says, "Before the commencement of every match the names of the players on each side shall be supplied in legible form to the referee by the respective captains, and the referee shall have power not to start the game until the names in legible form are in his possession. If legible' lists are not supplied the side so offending shall be liable to the penalty of losing the match. The management committee shall be final judge of the legibility or otherwise of the list supplied.”— motion that the rule be enforced was carried.

It was reported by Mr Stephens that the seven-a-side tournament last Saturday had been most successful, and he produced the Vickers Shield ior inspection. Members expressed their appreciation and admiration of the trophy, and on the motion of Mr Bowden congratulations were extended to the various winners of the seven-a-side tournament. The winners of the various sections are: Senior B, Waikeria; junior, Rovers: thirds, Te Awamutu; fourths, Old Boys. A football is to be donated to both the Wharepapa and Paterangi schools, and the secretary is to advise primary schools that there are four footballs available.

Permission was granted Waikeria to play an outside team on the day of their bye, the game to be arranged by the Rugby Union if possible. The letter from the referees’ appointments officer, setting out arrangements for having competent referees on duty, was received, and it was decided to reply that the Union appreciates and has every confidence in the referees and their organisation.
