NO VOTES FOR WOMEN
POSITION IN THE COUNTRY. AN EMPHATIC PROTEST. Country women are concerned at the fac't that while their town sisters had a vote in the recent local body elections by right of their husbands being l ratepayers, this privilege was denied them. There was a vigorous protest at this state of affairs at the interprovincial conference of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union in Palmerston North last week, when a remit was sponsored asking for equal voting rights with the women in towns. “Unless a country woman has a little bit of land in her own name, she cannot vote for county councils, power boards, or hospital boards.’’ stated one delegate. She added that she had been staggered when she learnt that the interprovincial conference of the Farmers’ Union had turned down a similar remit. She had discovered that the men were afraid of giving too wide a franchise lest they find their powers usurped others who had no stake in the country. It was decided to get in touch with the Farmers’ Union to discover what the members’ views on the subject actually were.
