ELECTRIC SUPPLY

TE AWAMUTU BOARD AFFAIRS. GENERAL BUSINESS. Mr J T. Johnson presided at the ordinary monthly meeting of Te Awamutu Electric Power Board on Friday, and also present were Messrs J. A. G. Sutherland, S. C. B. Macky, W*/ J. North, J. C. Montefiore, N. M. Lethbridge, A. L. Storey, and J. B. Teasdale. The secretary-manager, Mr D. T. B. McArthur, was in attendance. MEMBERS RE-ELECTED. The clerk to Waipa County Council advised the re-election of Messrs J. T. Johnson, J. A. G. Sutherland, A. L. Storey, J. B. Teasdale, and S. C. B. Macky to represent the combined district of Waipa county (part), Raglan county (part), and Kihikihi and Ohaupo town districts. STREET LIGHTS. To a question by Mr Sutherland, the manager said the Board would soon have to investigate and decide on a proposal to provide mercury vapour street lights in at least part of the borough of Te Awamutu. He added that each such light would cost about £l4 to erect. Members evinced a keen interest, and it was indicated that the matter would be dealt with at an early meeting. The chairman commented that he understood that the firm handling mercury vapour lights was willing, to install ten or a dozen of those lamps for demonstration purposes. SUPPLY TO KAWHIA. The acting engineer in chief and the under-secretary of the Public Works Department wrote enclosing a copy of a license issued to Martin Oldbury and Company, of Kawhia, to erect certain electric lines in portion of that township. He added: “Recently the company advised that Te Awamutu Electric Power Board was about to make arrangements to reticulate the area, and that the company’s license to supply the Kawhia County Council with electric light would not be required. However, after advising the company that arrangements would be made for the authority to be revoked, further advice was received to the effect that arrangements had now been made for the supply of power to Kawhia County Council. The company asks, therefore, that no action be taken in regard to revoking its license. Will you please advise if your Board is now in a position to supply in this particular area, and it is what arrangements are being made in this connection ? You will note that clause 4 of the license provides for it to lapse upon electrical energy being available from an electric power board.” Approval was expressed,, as the Board was thus adequately protected. POLES IN BOROUGH. The town clerk, Te Awamutu, advised that the Council had given approval for the Board to erect poles at the intersections specified in the application of 6th May. HEATING COSTS. To a question, the manager said the heavy heating load nowadays had affected the peak load, thus increasing the amount paid to the Government from the Board’s revenue. This brought the comment that the cooking charge taken alone was unprofitable at the present day. Storage stoves would eventually become a better proposition than any other avenue of consumption, though it was admitted that at present the revenue was below standard. A general discussion followed, elucidating certain points not generally understood. GENERAL. It was decided to hold the next monthly meeting of the Board on 24th (June. NEW MOTOR VEHICLES. The special committee set up to arrange for purchase of new motor vehicles presented its report, showing that old vehicles had been passed in and new ones secured- The total cost was £1239.
