BOBBY CALF TRADE

EFFORTS TO IMPROVE SYSTEM. DISTRICT POOL PROPOSED. A public meeting is to be held in Te Awamutu next Thursday to decide whether' or not to establish a district pool for the effective marketing of bobby calves. The matter was referred to at yesterday’s meeting of Te Awamutu branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, when the acting-president, Mr D. H. Cavers (Waikeria Road), said he had been one of a delegation to meet the freezing works’ and carriers’ representatives in connection with the matter. The Government would not initiate a national pool, largely because the farmers generally had not betrayed enough interest in the proposal, judging by the number of votes recorded through their dairy companies, However, voluntary pools in defined areas would be accorded protection by the Government where at least 80 per cent of the dairymen had expressed support of the pools.

Mr Cavers added that a meeting of all dairymen in Te Awamutu district was being convened for Thursday next, when Mr R. A. Candy, of Ngarua, and other speakers would attend and advise farmers on the best way to establish a voluntary pool in this district.

A fairly lengthy circular letter on the subject was received from the Pig-marketing Association offering its organisation in the matter of marketing bobby calves if a pool was established.

Mr Cavers asked members to do all possible to ensure a large and representative attendance at the meeting, as the subject was one of very considerable importance. He added that representatives of the Ohaupo, Cambridge, and Otorohanga branches had been invited to attend. The meeting would decide whether to form a pool or otherwise. Protection of the pool would, he added, be given only if the Carriers’ Association loyally co-oper-ated.
