TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

AS REPORTED IN WAIPA POST, MAY 16, 1913. The Auckland Board of Education has declared the recent election of a school committee for Te Awamutu invalid, as the hour of the householders’ meeting had. been altered from 7.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. A fresh election will be necessary. The Railway Officers’ Advocate, commenting on the proposed branch railway from Te Awamutu to Kawhia, said, if carried into effect, it “would mean that the many thousand feet of timber now carried on to Auckland from the King Country for shipment could be diverted to the fine natural harbour at Kawhia, thus saving a haulage of sixty miles. Vessels doubtful of a berth at Onehunga would not have to come round the Three Kings to the Waitemata, and much Crown and Maori land, rich but at present idle, would be thrown open and brought to fruitfulness. We are looking forward to the time when Te Awamutu will be an important junction, especially if the other branch line to Putaruiu becomes an accomplished fact.” At the meeting of the Te Awamutu branch of the Farmers’ Union the secretary gave notice to move at next meeting that a herd testing association be formed.

An Association Football Club has been formed in Te Awamutu, with the following officers: President, Mr T. Spear; vice-presidents, Messrs H. Y. Collins, H. R. Hogg, F. D. Wood, D. Norden, C. Daking, W. Auld, H. Luks and Dr Reekie; secretary, Mr T. Mclnnes; committee, Messrs Bickerstaff, Butcher, Shepherd, Fletcher, Nichol and Kerr.

Whilst Mr Benson, of Wharepuhunga, was taking two friends for a drive the horse took fright and bolted along the main road near Kihikihi. The three ocupants of the vehicle were thrown out but escaped serious injury.

Waipa Gun Club will be represent-, ed against Pukekohe in a match for the Ballistite Cup by the following: Wheeler, Garland, Taylor, Pollard, Winger, Pet ley, Bell, Benzie, Jull and McMurray; reserves, McSweeney, A. Jones and Williams. Tautari Football Club has elected the following officers: Patron, Captain Hope-Johnstone; president, Mr H. F. Saunders; vice-presidents, Messrs H. Stace, J. Houston, F. Kurth, F. Hockley, Innes-Jones, A. Brett. F. Ware; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. M. Rope; committee, Messrs H. Roigard, J. Laurenson, C. Kurth, W. Fisher, C. Roigard, Hildreth and Eustage; delegates to iParawera Rugby Union, Messrs W. E. Roigard, R. Anderson and C. M. Rope; captain, C. M. Rope. On Saturday Tautari defeated Wairaka 20 points to 3, in the first game of the season.

A correspondent writes to the Editor: “I notice that the Town Board’s workmen have been busy during the past week or two carting hundreds of loads of dust into the town. As this material comes from Mr Wm. Taylor’s property, business people will appreciate having a share of the well known

“Green Hill” property in their possession next summer.”

Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce has elected the following new members: Messrs H. Garstin, Thos. Spear, F. S. Tyer and J. Duncan. Mr H. Andrew was appointed to the Council, succeeding Mr A. J. Bray, appointed auditor.
