RATE COLLECTIONS

POSITION IN WAIPA COUNTY. VERY GOOD PERCENTAGE. In a report to Wednesday’s meeting of the Waipa County Council, the treasurer, Mr T. Grant, showed that the financial year commenced with a credit balance of £25,452 18s 4d, and ended with a credit of £23,324 19s 6d, the latter made up as follows: County fund account, credit £13,844 6s 9d, less outstanding cheques £266 15s 6d, net £13,577 Ils 3d; loan account, credit £9537 16s, cash in hand £209 12s 3d; total £23,324 19s 6d. For the financial year .1937 the corresponding figures were: County fund account, credit £13,019 16s lid, less outstanding cheques £164 14s 3d; total £12,855 2s 8d; loan account, credit £11,466 13s; cash in hand £ll3l 2s 8d; total £25,452 18s 4d. In anticipation of the raising of the Lake Crescent water supply and Fairfield bridge loans, advances amounting to £946 16s have been made by the general account. The position therefore is that although the credit balance in loan account has been diminished by £1928 17s 6d, the county fund remains approximately the same as it was at the close of the financial year 1937. Rate collection has again been very satisfactory. Of a total of £29,996 16s, rates struck on European land, the sum of £28,125 14s lOd (93.9 per cent) was actually collected prior to the close of the financial year. The European arrears outstanding on April 1, 1937, amounted to £3681 14s Bd, of which £2296 19s 3d (62.4 per cent) was collected by March 31, 1938. For the year ended March 31, 1937, current rates collected represented 91.7 per cent, and arrears collected 90.7 per cent. In the year 1936 current rates collected comprised 90.7 per cent, and arrears 53.4 per cent. For 1935 the collections were 87.8 per cent and 46.1 per cent. Congratulations were acccided the treasurer and his staff upon their attention to rate collection, and the chairman (Mr S. C. Macky) remarked that earlier in the year the Council had budgeted for a credit balance of only about £5OOO. The position of the county was good, and compared very favourably with that of any other county.

The congratulations were recorded, and acknowledged, Mr Grant paying a tribute to the ratepayers themselves for their co-operation.
