DRINKING AT DANCES

EFFORTS AT CONTROL. At a conference of representatives of women’s institutes and hall committees in the Pukekohe district, to discuss control measures to prevent drinking at dance halls, five resolutions were adopted. They are to be circulated to hall committees throughout the Franklin district and a large portion of Raglan County. A list of those that agree to enforce them will be published. The resolutions provide that the supply or consumption of any intoxicating liquor at dances or similar functions be prohibited unless permission is first obtained from the hall authorities; that admission be refused any person who appears to be under the influence of liquor; that anyone who appears to be under the influence of liquor or who is causing a disturbance shall be required to leave the hall and remain away; and that anyone creating a disturbance at a dance or otherwise behaving offensively shall be prosecuted. The conference will advise hall committees that the conditions on which a hall is let shall embody those specified in the resolutions. It was also decided to write to the Superintendent of Police at Auckland, suggesting that a constable be detailed to patrol dances in country halls.
