TYRE MILEAGE

HINTS FOR OWNERS AND DRIVERS. The subject of tyre mile::;;.- i- < '' prime importance to every owner. Cars and lyres arc better to-day than ever, and very good tyre life can lc expected under modern driving conditions. To-day the mileage given by all good makes of tyres depend' niu. more on the way the ear is driven and the roads upon which it travels than upon any other factors. There is considerable variation in tyre mileage due to difference .n road

suriaces and average temperature-;, even in localities elose to each oth The presence cr absence of hills will have an influence. Hard driving is one major cause of rapid wear. This covers fast driving, quick, grinding stops and skidding. Also detrimental to tyre mileage are incorrect inflation, wheels out of balance and misalignment of the front end of the car. Many of these factors are under the control of the driver. Tyre mileage is sufficiently important to w:urant close attention on the part of Oldsmobile owners to the hints now given by General Motors - Holden’s Ltd., to increase tyre life:— Have the pressures checked at least fortnightly and keep the tytes at the recommended pressure. Under inflation causes scuffing of the tread, weakening cl' the fabric and susceptibility to road damage. Over inflation gives a hard ride, causes the wheels to bounce and spin, and wears the tyres more rapidly. Do not constantly overload the cat. The rear tyres wear faster than those on the front wheels. To equalise the wear, interchange back and front tyres at intervals of about 5,000 miles. Front wheels always should he properly aligned. Have the alignment checked regularly once a year and whenever excessive tyre wear is indicated, especially uneven wear. Apply brakes gently. The ihla-’k streaks left on the roadway after an emergency stop arc composed of rubber from the tyres.
