RUGBY FACTORS

INTERESTING REMINISCENCES. Some amusing incidents from his tour with the New Zealand team to Australia and England were told by Mr A. I. Cottrell, in an address nt Christchurch recently. Two of them related to Palmer, an Auckland player, who was the hooker in a three-fronted scrum. Palmer was ticklish, and in packing the scrum had to place his arms over the two outside men. During a test match, just as the scrum packed down, Palmer uttered a loud scream, and the referee blew his whistle and broke up the scrum to stop the apparent “rough house.” His team-mates had played an old trick on Palmer by ticking him at the wrong time. A further incident occurred at Orange, in New South Wales, when the team was winning fairly easily and everyone was trying to get a try. Palmer had not scored, when there was a line-out on the opposing line. Cottrell got the ball and heard someone call for it. He passed it through the scrummage, and then heard a most unearthly scream. Beth packs of forwards stepped back to see what had happened, and Palmer walked over the line for his try for the match.
